Abstract

The medicinal value of Centaurea pullata is widely used for the cure of different ilneses throughout Pakistan. The aim of current research to examine the antifungal, cytotoxic, phytochemical screening and antioxidant capabilities of methanolic extract of (CPME) roots. After dry, plant was ground and mixed with methanol to make methanol crude extract. In-vitro biological assays were conducted using these methanolic extract as per standard procedures. Various in vitro antioxidant activities of Centaurea pullata methanolic extract were determined. Phytochemical screening, cytotoxic and antifungal activity also done by standard protocols. After 72 hours 100% death rate of brine shrimp was obtained at concentration of 3 mg/ml. The CPME showed 92% inhibition against Aspergillus flavus followed by Aspergillus niger 93% though the maximum result (94%) was shown by plant against Aspergillus fumigatus. Important scavenging results of methanolic extracts of Centaurea pullata obtained during scavenging of free radicals were 85% against DPPH, 83% to ABTS, 77% to Hydrogen peroxide, 87% to β-Carotene, 82% to Hydroxyl radical and 93% against Phosphomolybedate at 3 mg/ml. Due to Phytochemical assessment of extract showed detection of different medicinally active comounds. From the results obtained in this project pointed out that Centaurea pullata have important, antifungal, antioxidant, phytochemicals and cytotoxic bioactive constituents. Purification and in vivo studies of this plant are essential for more confirmation.
