Abstract

Abstract Just, 40 years back, a non-traditional crop of sunflower is introduced in Pakistan as the chief source of edible oil. There are only few hybrids uptill now has been developed by public and private sector in the country. Farmers took this new but emerging crop by reluctantly in their cropping pattern during first decade of this new century. However, hybrid developmental program remained the main issue in the country due to non-availability of proper staff and infrastructures. Therefore sunflower hybrids are totally depends upon private sector to import for its cultivation in the country. Because, however, the procedure is very fiddly for the development of new hybrid as the requirement of parents is necessary on each season to maintain and restore its fertility. Uptill now, acreage under the cultivation of sunflower crop in the country is still depends on imported hybrids. However, the role of Oilseeds Research Institute, Faisalabad is commendable as developed first national hybrid of sunflower (FH 331) some years back in the country. Now, new hybrids like FH 516 is expected to release soon being top yielder in national uniform sunflower yield trials conducted by national coordinator (sunflower), Islamabad during 2018-19 on public level for the replacement of exotic hybrids. ________________________________________ Keywords: sunflower, hybrid, CMS A-line, Restorer-line, public sector, first national hybrid, oil content.
