APPLIED FLORISTIC COMPOSITION OF THE NATIVE AS A RESOURCE FOR SUSTAINABLE PLANTING PROJECTS IN ARID AND SEMIARID REGIONS

ABDULLAH M.FARID GHAZAL
Abstract

Plant diversity has been rapidly disappearing in arid and semiarid regions due to climate change and human activities. Meanwhile, using plants for various purposes is still a widespread application. One of the most urgent applications of plant diversity is using the native plants in planting projects due to its extreme importance in transformation and achieving sustainability. In fact, the arid and semiarid regions need more focus to use their native species and adopt plant diversity in planting projects to improve the vegetal list that is more compatible with such harsh conditions. Therefore, the present work aims to assess the plants diversity of the main habitats through studying and analyzing floristic compositions, life form, and chorological characteristics in order to select new plants' materials to be used in LA under arid and semiarid conditions. This study covers 63 samples in all habitats in Wadi Al-Ahsibah in Al-Baha province southwest of Saudi Arabia. The floristic composition of the study area is defined. Plant species were classified and arranged according to their plant families, life form, chorology, habitats and finally to species for planting LA. The result recorded a total of 202 plant species belonging to 142 genera and 62 families. This list has provided 111 species as new plants' materials for LA visual, functions, urban environment, and environmental potential benefits such as landscape reclamation, hydrological applications, soil conservation, afforestation, and supporting wildlife. Finally, the arid and semiarid regions have great potential for biodiversity and floristic composition which could form a wide resource for planting projects.
