Abstract

Abstract The therapeutic properties of the medicinal plants are due to the presence of the bioactive components that decide their role in different systems of medicines. The present investigation is intended to screen bioactive components found in the four locally used antiarthritic plants. The quality and quantity of such components are not only providing an understanding of their effectiveness as medicines but also their utilizing limit. By available standard qualitative tests and methods the qualitative and quantitative screening were performed using aqueous and 80%methanolic extracts of gum, corm, rhizome and seeds of Moringa oleifera Lam (MO), Colchicum aitchisonii (CA), Smilax china Linn (SC) and Vernonia anthelmintica Linn (VA), respectively. Quantification of metabolites was done through UV- VIS Spectrophotometer. The qualitative standard tests of the aqueous and methanolic extract revealed the presence of various classes of components in both extracts likes glycosides, cardiac glycosides, tannin, flavonoid, phenolic, alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and steroids. Results of the quantitative estimations of the total bioactive components revealed significant differences at ????< 0.01. The highest content of alkaloid 20.9-27.5mg/g was found in CA, highest phenolic contents 76.74-232mg/g in the seeds of VA, while saponin 114.2-177.3mg/g was found to high in the gum of MO. All discussed plants possess several bioactive components along with antiinflammatory components, which indicate their therapeutic importance as well as data generated, from the active components analysis can be exploited for biological activities to ensure their safe use in medicine.
