EFFECT OF BIOFERTILIZER AND BORON APPLICATION ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SORGHUM (Sorghum bicolor) UNDER RAINFED CONDITIONS

MUHAMMAD ZAIGHUM
Abstract

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of biofertilizers and boron on morphological characteristics, growth and yield of (C4) sorghum. The sorghum variety Chakwal Sorghum was used for the study purpose. Urea as a source of nitrogen (N) and DAP as a source of phosphorus (P), while sulphate of potash was added as a source of potassium (K) at the rate of 100, 75 and 60 kg/ha of NPK respectively. Borax was added as a source of boron having two levels of boron. Boron-1 at rate of 1 kg/ha and Boron-2 at rate of 2 kg/ha, biofertilizer A (Biozote-M at the rate of 5 kg/ha) NARC product and biofertilizer B (CC7 at the rate of 5 kg/ha) prepared by Environmental sciences department PMAS Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi was applied in field at the rate of 24 g/plot. The results of the study show that, T5 treatment level comprising biofertilizer A (Biozote-M at the rate of 5 kg/ha) and boron 2 (borax 2 kg/ha) along with standard fertilizer dose (NPK 100, 75, 60 kg/ha) gave maximum plants per meter square, number of seeds per panicle, 1000 grain weight, biomass, seed yield and harvest index as compared to other treatments under study. In conclusion, to obtain good yield of sorghum in rainfed areas the combination of boron at 2 kg/ha and biofertilizer (Biozote-M) at 5 kg/ha along with recommended dose of fertilizers has good yield potential, however more research is needed in this area for more suitable combinations.
