GROWTH POTENTIAL OF EXOTIC Medicago sativa IN SINDH (KARACHI).

Zoya Baig
Abstract

This research was aimed to investigate the growth potential of exotic Medicago sativa in Sindh (Karachi). Temperature of the area could be the limiting factor for plant growth. Seed germination, vegetative growth and reproductive growth were examined in two extreme seasons of the area i.e. summer and winter. Seed germination of Medicago sativa was tested during summer and winter. The maximum germination 28.85 was attained from 9 to 11 days of incubation in summer (25-32°C) while speed of germination was 39.21. The final germination percentage of M. sativa was 56.5 percent in winter while the speed of germination was 66.47. Radicle growth on a daily basis was also examined. Percent germination, speed of germination and radicle length was significantly reduced (P<0.001) in summer compared to winter .Based on ANOVA it is shown that high temperature significantly affects the growth of plant including its height, root length, shoot length, number of leaves, and total weight (P<0.001). On the basis of above trails and results it is concluded that this pasture plant may be grown in winter, in the province of Sindh or colder areas of pakistan.
