VARIATION IN NITROGEN USE EFFICIENCY AND PHPTPSYNTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PEPPER

Abstract

Pepper has a greater demand for nitrogen fertilizer, and there are problems such as excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer, low utilization rate of nitrogen fertilizer, and environmental pollution caused by the production. This study investigated the difference of nitrogen absorption and photosynthetic characteristics of different pepper germplasm, which provided theoretical basis for the screening of high quality pepper varieties. The results found that there were significant differences in nitrogen absorption efficiency (NAE) and nitrogen use efficiency(NUE) for peppers at two nitrogen levels. Plant dry mass and NUE were significantly and positively correlated with nitrogen utilization index, and positively correlated with photosynthetic rate; photosynthetic rate was significantly and positively correlated with NUE; NAE was negatively correlated with root nitrogen content, while NUE was negatively correlated with stem and leaf nitrogen content. 16 pepper germplasm was divided into four types based the average dry weight of the plants at two nitrogen levels. Path analysis showed that the contribution rate of NUE to nitrogen efficiency at the two nitrogen levels was greater than the NAE. Taking together, the nitrogen efficiency of pepper seedling had germplasm difference, and the plant dry mass could be used as the first choice index for nitrogen efficiency evaluation at seedling stage, while root nitrogen content, nitrogen utilization index, and photosynthetic rate could be selected as the secondary indicator for nitrogen efficiency. The NUE of plant was the main factor of high nitrogen efficiency in pepper seedlings.
