THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT HARVEST DATES ON THE YIELD AND QUALITY OF THE GOLDEN THISTLE (Scolymus hispanicus L.)

Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the yield and quality alterations of the plant golden thistle (Scolymus hispanicus L.) harvested at different stages. The trial was conducted according to the randomized blocks trial design under the ecological conditions of Izmir-Menemen for two growing years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 and the plants were harvested from the November to August for the period of 10 months time. Root lenght (cm), root yield (kg ha-1), root bark yield (kg ha-1), dry root bark yield (kg ha-1), root collar diameter (mm), root xylem diameter (mm), cortex thickness (mm), taraxasterol rate (%) taraxasterol acetate rate (%) and the sensorial properties of the harvested plants were determined. The highest root and root cortex yields were obtained from the plants which were harvested in july, the average of two years were 19770.64 kg ha-1 and 6480.65 kg ha-1, respectively. The highest taraxasterol and taraxasterol acetate rates were obtained in May as 0.042% and 0.015% in two years respectively. The average value of ten different sensorial evaluations were recorded as sensorial properties. The most appreciated harvests were obtained in November with the highest score 4.60 and the plant was consumed until May preferably, after May it is regarded as unfavourable and the lowest score was obtained in august as 1.75.
