EFFECTS OF SEAWEED AND MICROALGA LIQUID EXTRACTS AND THEIR COMBINATION ON SEED GERMINATION PARAMETERS AND GROWTH OF MILKWEED SEEDLING (CALOTROPIS PROCERA AIT)

BABAK PILEHVAR
Abstract

The effects of liquid extracts from seaweed (Sargassuman angustifolium) and microalga (Spirulina platensis) of the Persian Gulf, as biostimulants, on the germination and growth of milkweed seedling (Calotropis procera Ait) were investigated. Different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 %) of seaweed and microalga liquid extracts (SLE and MLE and their combined) were assessed in germination parameters (germination percentage, mean germination time, and seed vigor index) and primary growth parameters (plumule length, radical length, plumule and radical fresh and dry weight) of milkweed seedlings. The results indicated that the most germination parameters (except seed vigor) were increased at all concentrations of SLE and 0.5% of MLE. Also, the growth parameters were increased in lower concentrations of their combined extracts. Our data about combined algal treatments showed that SLE 0.5 and 1% + MLE 0.5% led to increasing germination and growth of treated plants compared to control. Finally, SLE 1% and MLE 0.5 % were found to be more successful and better candidates as developing effective biostimulants for improving seed germination indices of milkweed plant. The present study demonstrated that seaweed and microalga extracts due to affordability, easy access and environmental compatibility could be applied as an supplement organic fertilizer.
