MORPHOLOGICAL, ANATOMICAL AND STATISTICAL EVIDENCE FOR HETEROGENEITY OF PLAGIOTHECIUM NEMORALE (MITT.) A.JEAGER

Grzegorz J. Wolski
Abstract

Taxonomically important characteristics of species from the genus Plagiothecium Schimp. indicated by individual researchers overlap, which makes it very difficult to distinguish these species from each other. The resulting taxonomic problems make it difficult not only to distinguish species from each other (e.g.: Plagiothecium nemorale, P. succulentum (Wilson) Lindb., P. cavifolium (Brid.) Z. Iwats. or P. denticulatum (Hedw.) Schimp.) but even to distinguish specimens of one taxon. The species, described as a most taxonomic problems and which is covered by the presented article is P. nemorale. The taxonomic revision and detailed characterisation based on 22 features were performed. The material came from the largest Herbaria of Central and Eastern Europe (BRNU, PL, PR, PRC, BRA, SLO, IBL, KRAM B, LBL, LOD, POZG-B, SOSN, BILAS, Silava, TAA, TALL, TAM, TU, H). The article presents a range of variability of the tested features and shows that, using morphological and anatomical research as well as statistical analyses within P. nemorale in Central and Eastern Europe, we can observe two separate taxa, and one of them refers to the P. longisetum Lindb. Additionally article indicates new diagnostic features and ways that allow these taxa to be distinguished from each other.
