Abstract

The present study in sesame hybrids was undertaken to make an estimation of the combined effects of hybridization and chemical mutagen treatment (EMS) on variability yield and yield attributing traits in F2M2 generation. Total twelve populations (three one cycle EMS treated population (F21M2), three two cycle EMS treated population (F22M2), their respective controls (F2s) and three varieties) were grown in a randomized block design with three replications during kharif, 2017. Observations were taken on four quantitative traits, viz., plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of capsules per plant and seed yield per plant. ANOVA of mean, standard deviation and CV was carried out and the significance differences among treatments tested by ' F' and t tests. In general, the F2M2 results indicated increased variability for number of capsules per plant and seed yield per plant, whereas reduced variability for plant height in mutant population than respective controls. The increased or decreased in variability for these characters had arisen from induced micromutations and that resulting from segregation and recombination of polygenes in hybrid populations are cumulative. The changes in association among seed yield and its components in F2M2 mutant population relative to their respective controls indicated that significant genetic changes have been occurred as a result of EMS treatment. The changes in associations must have come about through independent polygenic mutations and enhanced recombination of polygenes affecting different characters.
