ASSESSMENT OF BIODIESEL QUALITY PRODUCED FROM CLADOPHORA OIL BY USING ATR-FTIR
ABUBAKAR MUHAMMAD
Abstract
Biofuel produced from algae is sustainable and environment friendly in response to food security and climate changes. In the present work, the quality of the biodiesel produced from Cladophora oil was assessed. The algal biomass was obtained by growing the alga in an aquarium for six months. The extraction of oil from the Cladophora sp. was carried out using soxhlet extraction method. The extracted oil was subjected to lipase-mediated transesterification. The contents and quality of fatty acid monoalkyl esters (FAAE) produced were analyzed using FTIR. The FTIR spectra of biodiesel indicate C=O stretching band of methyl ester at wave number 1743 cm-1and carbonyl bands at wave number 1252, 1200, and 1175 cm-1. Analysis of these characteristic regions showed the best quality biodiesel from the Cladophora oil was obtained when lipase-mediated transesterification was carried out using methanol (at alcohol to oil ratio of 1:8) at 50ºC after 6 h stirring.
