GROWTH ADAPTABILITY AND MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF LAVENDER (LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA) TO ALPINE CONDITIONS IN NORTHEAST CHINA

Mingyang Chang
Abstract

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is native to the Mediterranean region, where the climate is hot and dry. Here, we explored growth regularity of branches and leaves in L. angustifolia cultivated in the cooler alpine region of northeast China and provided the first description of the branch and leaf ultrastructures. The results indicated allometric growth during the vegetative period, which branch spatial structure and leaf growth characteristics are likely to benefit plant stability and light interception for more efficient photosynthesis. The plants were better adapted to the local environment in 2017 than in 2016 in the field. Mature glands of L. angustifolia were enlarged, comprised eight cells, and were connected to the epidermal cells through the stalks. Branch and leaf epidermal cells were densely covered with hairs, which reduce evapotranspiration and preserve warm. Intercellular ornamentation in the epidermis indicated the enhanced cell stability. Dense stomatal apparatus consist of two kidney-shaped guard cells and ornamentation between guard and epidermal cells could improve regulation of stomatal opening and closing. Well-developed vascular tissue is likely to aid branch extension, support, and compression resistance, while extensive xylem vessels indicate efficient vertical and horizontal transport of water and ions. We considered that the structural characteristics of branch and leaf material of L. angustifolia reflect the anatomical adaptations to environmental conditions. Therefore, the growth regularity and adaptability of L. angustifolia under cold weather conditions are hopeful to promote the plant successful development in Northeast China.
