Abstract

Epilithic diatoms are very important for sustainable aquatic ecosystems. Diatoms play a key role in aquatic ecosystems and indicate water quality. It is also included in the group that should be examined in order to determine biodiversity in lotic ecosystems. This research evaluated the ecological status of different streams in the Sakarya basin of Turkey using trophic index Turkey (TIT), Eutrophication and/or Pollution Index – Diatom based (EPI-D), Genus diatom index (IDG) based on diatom assemblages. This study has been carried out in the Istanbul Aliağa, Bostancı and Orta streams. The streams’ water temperature ( 9.10 – 14.1 °C), dissolved oxygen (8.2 - 9.4 mg l−1), pH (7.1 – 7.5), and conductivity (210.2 – 240.4 μS / cm) were determined. The epilithic algal flora consisted of 30 taxa belonging to the Bacillariophyta. 21 species belonging to the Istanbul Stream, 14 taxa belonging to the Bostancı Stream, 12 taxa belonging to the Orta Stream and 10 species belonging to the Aliaga Stream, that are the important streams of the Sakarya basin. Cocconeis pediculus Ehrenb., Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère and Cymbella affinis Kütz. were the most abundant species. TIT values ranged between 2.02 in Bostancı stream and 2.52 in İstanbul stream. EPI-D values ranged between 1.09 İstanbul and 1.36 in Orta stream. IDG values ranged from 3.75 Aliağa and 4.15 Bostancı Stream. According to diatom composition, streams exhibited oligotrophic character. When EPI-D, TIT and IDG index were evaluated, it was determined that the streams had good quality.
