BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF BERBERIS LYCIUM ROYLE PLANT PARTS FOUND IN AZAD JAMMU AND KASHMIR

Abstract


Chemical composition plant is mainly governed by climatic conditions, where spatial difference shows telling impacts on their medicinal purposes. Berberis lycium Royle is a medicinal plant grown in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, which has been commonly used to treat number of diseases. The plant parts (roots, leaves, stem, thorn and fruits) were collected as samples from five districts namely Muzaffarabad, Hattiyan, Bagh, Poonch and Neelum, and air dried at room temperature. Samples were randomly selected from these five districts covering 35 locations, where 15 sampling locations were selected from Neelum and seven each from districts Muzaffabad and Hattian. The rest of the six locations were three each from Poonch and Bagh districts. Three plants were selected from each location and from each plant three tillers were selected. The biochemical analysis was conducted for total phenolic contents (TPC), chlorophyll content and antioxidant activity to compare the differences. Highest level of TPC found was 88.66 ±1.07 µg/g of Gallic Acid Equivalent phenolics (GAE) from leaves collected from Chanjhal, District Muzaffarabd of Azad Kashmir. Highest total chlorophyll contents were found in samples collected from Sathrian 3.75±0.53 µg/ml District Neelum. Highest antioxidant activity with lowest IC50 value was obtained from stem, root and fruits 810.51, 513.33 and 662.23 µg/ml respectively collected from Serli Scha, District Muzaffarabad when compared to other districts. Hence, it is concluded that amongst five districts, plant parts (stem, fruits and root) collected from District Muzaffarabad Azad Kashmir possess the highest medicinal potential due to its unique climatic conditions.
