AGRO-MORPHOLOGICAL AND UTRITIONAL ANALYSIS OF SOME SELECTED VARIETIES OF WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.)

Mahapara Nisar
Abstract

Variations in traits of a crop are essential to study because these enable for their sustainable production under different environmental conditions. This investigation was carried out on ten wheat varieties for their agro-morphological attributes and their nutritional analysis. The experiment was carried out at NARC Islamabad Pakistan. Eleven morphological characters which include Plant height, Shoot length, Fresh weight, Flag leaf length, Spike length, spike weight, Number of spikelets per spike, Number of seeds per spike, Awns length, Awns attitude and seed color. Physical tests i e Test weight and Thousands kernel weight and biochemical tests include Moisture contents, Ash %, Fiber %, Fat%, Protein% and Gluten determination were performed to characterize the wheat varieties. Significant differences were recorded for each of the characters studied which indicate that large amount of variations are present among the varieties. The maximum plant height (137.16cm), Shoot length (108.68cm) for NARC-11 and awn length (125.93mm). NR-499 had the maximum of spikelets per spike (100), PAK-13 had largest spike (21.78cm), maximum spike weight (7.00g) and maximum number of seeds (63). BORLOG-16 had the maximum protein (13.31%) and NR-488 had maximum ash (1.48%) and fat content (2.52%) and PAK-13 had maximum dry and wet gluten (9.39 and 30.85%). On the basis of agro-morphological characters the PAK-13 was ranked highest because it has given maximum yield. Overall, quality of wheat varieties was good and comparable to international standards. The information gathered on the diversity among the wheat varieties based on the agro-morphological attributes will be helpful for plant breeders for the selection of breeding materials and implementation of selection strategies.
