INVESTIGATION OF GENOTYPIC VARIATION OF LOCAL MAIZE POPULATION WITH RAPD AND SSR MARKERS

Anum Jehangir
Abstract

Maize which is also known as corn, first cultivated by local people in Mexico around 10,000 years before and it is a large grain plant. Corn has six major types pod corn , flint corn , dent corn , flour corn , popcorn and sweet corn. The plant’s fertile stem yields ovuliferous inflorescences and separate pollen and which are fruits that yield kernels, used in cooking as a starch. Globally maize is one of the massively domesticated cereal crops. According to genetic indication maize is radically less diverse than it was earlier, due to worldwide its sufficient cultivation which has led to concerns about mono cropping and biodiversity. According to anti-Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) community the crop has been utilized as a razzing point and the cereal is extensively modified naturally. The genome of maize is about 2.4Gbp having haploid number 10 (Schnable et al. 2009; Zhang et al. 2009). As its genome come from an early tetra-ploidy event, so it is differentiated from other grasses.
