Synergistic pretreatment of waste activated sludge using high pressure homogenization and free nitrous acid to enhance biogas (methane) production during anaerobic digestion

Abstract

To explore the effect of combined free nitrous acid (FNA) and high pressure homogenization (HPH) pretreatment on the biodegradation and solubilization of waste activated sludge (WAS) through anaerobic digestion, this study was conducted. Moreover, synergistic effects of HPH and FNA pretreatment were investigated and archaeal and bacterial community structure were analyzed. Through combined pretreatment of FNA (2.49 mg/l) and HPH (40 MPa), WAS was solubilized and subsequently improved anaerobic digestion. The cumulative biogas production from the reactor with the HPH-FNA pretreatment substrate was 53.12%, 28.81% and 182.81% more than produced from the single HPH, FNA and raw sludge, respectively. Increase in methane content in the biogas was observed in such order: HPH-FNA (65%) >FNA (60%) >HPH (54%) > RAW (49%). The VS removal in the HPH-FNA pretreatment system was 53% more than the raw sludge. Illumina MiSeq sequencing analysis showed that the dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes. Regarding the Archaeal genera Methanospirillum and Methanosaeta were increase in abundance, significantly in the HPH-FNA system.
