Abstract

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a keystone among perio-pathogenic bacteria to initiate periodontitis and treatment is better when the periodontal pathogens including Porphyromonas gingivalis are totally eliminated. The gum essential oil of Pistacia atlantica Kurdica is reported to have many bioactive constituents having antimicrobial activity against many bacteria. This study investigates the antibacterial effect of this extracts against Porphyromonas gingivalis. Subgingival plaque samples were collected from individuals having periodontitis with the probing pocket depth of at least 6mm; the isolation and confirmation of Porphyromonas gingivalis were done by Conventional microbiological tests and molecular technique. The extraction of essential oil was done by hydrodistillation. Antibacterial activity of the extract against Porphyromonas gingivalis has been determined by two fold serial dilution method, minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentrations were also determined. Analysis of the extract was performed by using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) apparatus. This study revealed that the extract has an antimicrobial effect against P. gingivalis growth; α Pinene was the main compound of the extract by GC analysis. The extract was able to demonstrate inhibitory and bactericidal activity against P. gingivalis. The essential oil of Pistacia atlantica Kurdica could be used as an adjuvant in the treatment of periodontitis.
