PHYTOTOXIC EVALUATION OF UNWANTED PLANTS AGAINST WHEAT-CHICKPEA GERMINATION AND GROWTH

Shah Zareen
Abstract

Biochemical war betwixt plants, especially weed-crop is an alarming issue for the farming community and research scientists; upsetting of the natural ecosystem and reducing biological and grain yield. By nature, weed plant has competitive and biochemical potential to be pitted against the neighbor desired plant seeds germination and growth. Because, weed plants very famous for fast growth, huge seed production, early maturity, long dormant period, short lifecycle, maximum canopy coverage and early adjustment with the environment. Here, we discuss the active bio-potential activity of weed plants against very important winter crops (cereal wheat and legume chickpea). Among weeds Trianthema portulacastrum L., Cyperus rotundus L., Plantago lenceolata L., Xanthium strumarium L., Oxalis carniculata L., and Eleusine indica L. were selected as treatments. We investigate that weeds collected from district Dera Ismail Khan were more phytotoxic for wheat and chickpea, and inhibit seed germination i.e. 44.53%,and 37.97%. Extract from T. portulascastrum was declared inhibitory against both crops in term of complete germination inhibition and seedling growth retardation. In short, the competition of weed-crop plants is the main issue of current retardation in the growth and development as well as its final yields.
