Screening of medicinally important Trillium govanianum for their antibacterial, phytotoxic and insecticidal activities

Khaleeq-Uz-Zaman
Abstract

Different solvent extracted samples from Trillium govanianum were evaluated for their antibacterial, insecticidal and phytotoxic activities. All extracts showed good antimicrobial activities. The most vulnerable Gram-positive bacterium was Staphylococcus aureus which was inhibited by all extracts from Trillium govanianum as compared to Bacillus subtilis. Xanthomonas compestris and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the most susceptible Gram-negative bacterial strains, while Escherichia coli were highly resistant among the Gram-negative bacteria. Chloroform extracted sample exhibited the highest phytotoxic activity followed by ethanol while crude methanol and water fractions showed lowest phytotoxic activity. Chloroform extracted sample showed maximum insecticidal activity against Tribolium castaneum and Sitophilus oryzae while water samples was not effective against the tested insect at any concentration.
