Dr. Bushreen Jahan
Abstract
Mitotic metaphase chromosome studies were carried out on the spicy crop plant Capsicum annum cultivated in Karachi, Pakistan with the aim of generating useful karyological data that would be needed in designing appropriate improvement programmes for the crop. Specimens consisting of ripe fruits were collected from nine localities across the city. Mitotic chromosomes were assessed through meristematic root tips. Pretreatment in 0.05% Colchicine, fixation, hydrolysis, squashing and staining were carried out appropriately with required timing. Result showed 2n = 24 chromosomes at metaphase with a size range of 1.0 - 4.04µm. The karyotype was essentially symmetrical, consisted of metacentric and sub metacentric chromosomes.
