AN ETHNOBOTANICAL INVENTORY OF THE SHAH ALLAH DITTA VILLAGE, DISTRICT ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN

Abstract


With the introduction of modern communication systems and formal education structures, indigenous communities are ever more being exposed to modern services in Pakistan. This has led to age old traditional knowledge being substituted with contemporary knowledge. Thus the aim of present research was to record the indigenous knowledge related to ethnobotanically important plant species of the Shah Allah Ditta village, District Islamabad, Pakistan. Field trips together with ethnobotanical surveys were conducted in the study area from October, 2014 to January, 2015. Results indicate that 104 plant species belonging to 44 families are used by locals to treat various human diseases. Asteraceae, Fabaceae and Poaceae were most important plant families used by locals whereas Olea ferruginea Royle is appeared to be one of the most ethnobotanically important plant with highest used value percentage 2.64%. The majority of plants (45%) used by the locals were herbs which could be because of abundance of herb in areas very close to houses as compared to relative infrequency of trees or shrubs. Present study indicate that Shah Allah Ditta is an important village preserving traditional knowledge such crucial indigenous knowledge should be preserved for posterity before it disappears.
