Abstract

Intercropping mixture forage legume with cereal is widely applied planting pattern in mixed crop-livestock systems. In consequence of progressing concern about the environmental impact and the adverse impacts of climate change on fodder subsistence and yield production stability over the time in the current sole cropping system the mixture forage legume-cereal intercropping approach had been recommended as a concrete management practice to sustain fodder yielding as well as progress forage quality and nutritive value under sustenance or low-input environments. Accordingly this study directed to achieve the sustainability of smallholder on mixed farming systems in rainfed area to deal with climate change effects by investigate the viability of applying a vibrant intercropping of forage legume-cereal mixture practice for producing high quality and quantity forage with high yield stability performance among their respective sole crops. Intercropping of vetch-barley mixtures were applied at various ratio vetch(V):barley(B) (V80:B20; V60:B40; V40:B60; V20:B80) comparing with their respective sole crops in field trail set in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications at two sites. Results indicated that intercropping forage legume-cereal mixture practice achieved highest yield stability performance and was significantly higher than their corresponding sole crops. Additionally results informed that proportion of the components limited the proper quality nutritive value and quantity of mixture forage. Positively intercropping mixture vetch : barley (60:40%) cutting at booting stage might sort valuable legume–cereal mixtures forage and it might stand certified correspondingly a proper executive approach in aid of generating extremely yielding and valued fodder in rainfed area.
