PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING, TOTAL PHENOLIC AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF SELECTED FRUIT PLANT GROWING IN MALAKAND DIVISION, PAKISTAN
IRFAN KHAN
Abstract
The present investigation was undertaken to determine phytochemical and bioactivities in different fruit plants. Random samples were taken from selected plant, grinded into powdered and analyzed for bioactivities. Quantitative determination of total phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant activities (DPPH) of methanolic extract was carried out using colorimetric methods. Phytochemical screening of plant extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, phlobatanins, saponins, flavonoids, reducing sugar, glycosides, terpenoids and anthraquinones. Fruit species Myrsine africana, Rubus fruiticosus, Syzygium commini and Berberis lycium showed the highest concentration of ascorbic acid and phenolic contents. Citrus sinensis, Punica granatum, Vitis vinifera and Vitis labrusca showed moderate concentration of ascorbic acid and antioxidant activities among the selected fruit species. Pyrus communis, Duchesnea indica and Morus alba showed the lowest concentration of ascorbic acid and hence lowest antioxidant activities. However all the tested fruits species were found inactive against different bacterial strains.
