Abstract

Medicinal plants possess the ability to treat various ailments and hence the Sambucus wightiana was screened for antibacterial, antifungal, phytotoxic, haemagglutination, antithrombotic and antihemolysin activities. The ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and aqueous fractions of S. wightiana showed good inhibition against Serratia marcescens and Salmonella typhi while the crude methanolic extract (Cr. MeOH Ext.), n-hexane, Chloroform (CHCl3) showed moderate activity against Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, S. marcescens and S. typhi. The EtOAc and aqueous fractions possesses significant antifungal activity against Alternaria alternata and Fusarium oxysporum while the same test samples showed good inhibition against F. oxysporum and Trichoderma harzianum. The Cr. MeOH ext and CHCl3 fraction possess good and moderate activity against Paecilomyces fulvus and F. oxysporum and Polysphondylium pallidum, respectively. The phytotoxic activity of the test samples was concentration dependent against Lemna minor (L); Cr. MeOH Ext. showed good activity followed by moderate activity for aqueous and EtOAc fractions, respectively. The Cr. MeOH ext, n-hexane, EtOAc and aqueous fractions of the plant showed moderate antithrombotic activity while low activity was observed for the CHCl3 fraction. No haemagglutination effect was observed against erythrocytes of all blood groups (ABO). The percent antihemolysin activity against haemolytic E. coli was concentration dependent; CHCl3 fraction (71.50), EtOAc (67.59), Cr. MeOH Ext. (66.86), n-hexane (59.50) and aqueous (51.60) at 300µl.
