Abstract

This study elaborates on the antioxidant and anticholinesterase potential of the Ephedra vulgaris and Onosma hispidum barks. Phytochemical screening indicated the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids and phenolics in both plants. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging activity, total phenolic contents, antioxidants and AChE activity. Among all the plant fractions, O. hispidum ethyl acetate fraction has revealed a low IC50 value in DPPH test (19.63±0.16 µg/mL), highest DPPH percentage inhibition (98.3±0.29%), highest total antioxidant activity (2.379±0.14 µg/mL), highest FRAP value (2008.4±0.57 µM/mL) and highest total phenolic contents (189.5±1.13 mg/g). However, for AChE activity, O. hispidum n-butanol fraction showed the lowest IC50 value (9.56±0.07 mg/mL) and highest AChE inhibition (98.32±0.16%). The current findings revealed that O. hispidum exhibits appreciable antioxidant and AChE activity and can be used as source of antioxidants as well as AChE inhibitors.
