Abstract

Among pulses pea is an important legume crop and major source of proteins. It also plays a positive role in soil fertility restoration by fixing nitrogen. In Pakistan pea production is quite low than other countries. The present research was conducted to study potential of pea crop for enhanced seed yield related traits. For this purpose eight diverse genotypes namely 19605, 20202, 26710, 20300, 19716, 20126, 26701 and 20153 were crossed in 8 × 8 half diallel mating design. Parental accessions, F1 and F2 populations were field planted and data were collected for seed yield related in Pisum sativum L. Significant genotypic differences were observed for number of branches/plant, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, pod length, pod width, pod weight, hundred fresh seed weight and hundred dry seed weight inF1 and F2 generations of Pisum sativum L. SCA variance was found higher for all the studied traits in both generations demonstrated the dominance of non-additive type of gene action in the inheritance of these traits. Accession 20153 was found good general combiner for pod length, pod width and number of seeds/pod in F1 generation while in F2 generation same accession was also good combiner for hundred fresh seed weight and hundred dry seed weight in Pisum sativum L. Cross combination 26710 × 20153 was good specific combination for number of branches/plant and pod weight in F1 generation while same cross combination was found good specific combination for number of pods/plant in F2 generation of Pisum sativum L. due to maximum significant and positive specific combining ability effects. Non-additive type of gene action for all traits advocated for heterosis breeding of development of high yielding varieties in pea.
