A review: Sedges as an important ecological component of ecosystem.

IMRAN FAKHAR
Abstract

Sedges (Cyperaceae) are common and widespread family of vascular flowering throughout the world. They are long-lived perennials with significant abundance and persistence in the landscape. Speciation patterns in the family are of considerable interest due to complex biogeographical patterns and a high degree of habitat specificity. Normally sedges thrive in wetlands, but some of the species have adapted to survive in a wide range of habitats and climatic conditions hence holding immense ecological importance. Potential benefits exist for medicinal products identified from several members of family. A range of organisms, together with mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, insects and fungi, are found to be dependent on, or making use of family. A significant relationship exists between sedges and several ecosystem. Implications for the conservation and ecology of both sedges and associated species are important for the ecosystem.
