SCREENING AND EVALUATION OF ALLELOPATHIC POTENTIAL OF Carica papaya L. AGAINST SELECTED WEEDS

TAUSEEF ANWAR
Abstract

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the allelopathic potential C. papaya against some major weeds of wheat (Phalaris minor, Avena fatua, Chenopodium album, Euphorbia helioscopia and Rumex dentatus). Extract and sandwich bioassay were used to investigate the effect of C. papaya on the seeds of selected weeds on filter paper and soil. Under the allelopathic study germination percentage, radical length and plumule length were studied under the different concentrations 50%, 75% and 100% of extracts, and 25mg and 50mg leaf powder in sandwich. C. papaya aqueous, methanolic and hexane extracts showed promising allelopathic potential, increased extract concentration accompanied increased inhibitory rate. Among different extracts used methanolic extracts showed highest inhibitory effect, the effects being more pronounced in assay on soil. Methanolic extracts inhibited germination of P. minor by 45%, followed by E. helioscopia (50%) and A. fatua (41%). Similarly, radical length of P. minor was inhibited best by 49%, followed by R. dentatus (50%) and A. fatua (46%), while the of plumule length for P. minor and E. helioscopia was inhibited by 48% and 49%, respectively. Sandwich bioassay also exhibited better inhibitory effects on soil medium having germination inhibition of 39% for A. fatua, 49% for P. minor and 57% for E. helioscopia. The radical length was inhibited best for R. dentatus, A. fatua and P. minor with 41%, 38% and 35%, respectively, while plumule length was inhibited by 45% for C. album and 33% for P. minor. Best on the results, it can be concluded that C. papya showed good allelopathic activity that may be used in future herbicide screening program in order to launch in the market.
