MUHAMMAD ISHTIAQ
Abstract

Ethnomedicinal study was conducted to explore the medicinal potential of plants of two genera of family Loranthaceae viz: Loranthus and Viscum from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Pakistan). Commonly prevailing five species Loranthus longiflorus, Loranthus pulverulentus, Loranthus cordifolius, Viscum album and Viscum cruciatum were selected. Plant samples were collected from different areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. A comprehensive survey from different locations was conducted by using questionnaire methodology consisting of open-ended and closed-ended interview strategy. A total of 50 informants (30 male and 20 female) were interviewed from local people and rural Hakims (herbalists). Viscum album is used for cure of diabetic, hypertension, cardiac beat disorders. Loranthus pulverulentus is effective in cure of hepatitis and hyperglycemia. Loranthus pulverulentus has very powerful antioxidant impact and it lessens electromagnetic disorders of brain. Plants were analyzed by using microstatistical analysis of Informant Consensus Factor (ICF), Fidelity level (FL), Data matrix ranking (DMR) and Priority ranking (PR). Analysis depicted that ICF was highest (16.8) for veterinary diseases and lowest value (1.7) for hyperactivity in children and anxiety. Data matrix ranking was done for the members of Loranthaceae which showed that Loranthus longoflorous was found at 1st rank and Viscum cruciatum was at 5th rank. Priority ranking (PR) was used to determine threats to medicinal plants based on their level of multiple usage leading to massive destruction of plant communities by indigenous populations of the area.
