Abstract

Citrus bacterial canker (CBC) is a leaf spotting and rind blemishing disease which is widely common in Indo-Pak sub-continent of Asia. It possesses a major threat to economy of Pakistan due to its quarantine importance. This study was organized to find out the current status of CBC in Pakistan. Major citrus growing areas of Punjab and KPK were visited. CBC incidence and severity was recorded along with collection of infected samples. Incidence of CBC in different districts of Punjab was as follows: Sargodha (81%), Toba Tek Singh (60%), Jhang (29%), Faisalabad (60%), Chinniot (64%), Mianwali (60%), Layyah (51%), Bhakkar (54%), Multan (20%), Gujrat (20%), MandiBahauddin (27%), Sialkot (0%), Lahore (32%), Sahiwal (0%), Chichawatni (2%) and Attock (20%). Sahiwal andSialkot were free from the disease. In KPK severity of citrus canker was very low.In total 303 orchards were visited and 96 isolates were confirmed as Xanthomonas citripv. citribased on PCR and pathogenicity tests. Further studies are required to determine the pathogenic diversity inX. citripv. citripopulation in Pakistan. Keyword: Citrus canker, incidence, severity, PCR
