Genome-wide identification and characterization of the expansin gene family in Triticum urartu

Peng Li-na
Abstract

Plant expansin proteins assist in the loosening of the cell wall during many biological processes. They may be useful for crop improvement and enhancement of fruit development and stress resistance. Previous studies on Arabidopis, rice, and Populus trichocarpa have analyzed the evolutionary history and gene structure. Wheat (Triticum urartu) is a major crop species, but there has been little analysis of the expansin of T. urartu. A genome-wide analysis of T. urartu expansin family is a necessary. This study covered 39 expansins from T. urartu, including 19 EXPA genes, 18 EXPB genes, and 2 EXLA genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these 39 expansin genes could be divided in 12 subgroups in Arabidopsis-rice clades. Gene structure and conserved protein domains of TuEXPs suggested that each group is relatively conservative. Cis-acting element analysis showed each expansin gene and groups of several expansin genes to be co-regulated by both internal and environment factors. This valuable information should provide a foundation for cloning and exploration of expansin family in T. urartu.
