MANAGEMENT OF RALSTONIA SOLANACEARUM (SMITH) YABUUCHI WILT IN TOMATO WITH DRIED POWDER OF THE MEDICINAL PLANT WITHANIA SOMNIFERA (L) DUNAL.

Abstract


The potential of Withania somnifera (L) Dunal plant parts used as dried powders (applied at different rates and at different application timings), was tested for the control of bacterial wilt (BW) of tomato under in-vitro as well as in-vivo conditions. Maximum zone of inhibition or ZI values (23 mm) were recorded when leaves-powder were used at a concentration of 15% followed by that of the green top. The lowest ZI value (15 mm) was observed for stem-powder at the concentration of 5%. The higher dose of 30g kg-1 potted soil applied 20 days before transplanting or 20 DBT produced smaller AUDPC values, lower CFU g-1 dry soil, and enhanced plant growth characters such as root and shoot length, and fresh and dry plant bio-mass more than what other treatments did. This treatment combination was followed by 30g Kg-1 potted soil applied 10 DBT. The poorest plant growth characters were observed in the treatment combination of 15g/kg soil applied 0 DBT. Significantly smaller AUDPC values, and lower CFU g-1 dry soil values were recorded for the treatment of 45g (green-top powder) kg-1 soil applied 20 DBT. However, plant growth characters of this treatment combination were lower than those of 30g kg-1 soil applied 20 DBT suggesting some phytotoxic effect of the dried powder used at this dose. In plant parts experiment, the leaf-powder (30g Kg-1 soil) promoted the plant growth characters the most, followed by green-top powder. Although the higher dose of 45 g kg-1 soil of leaf powder, like that of green-top powder, produced lower AUDPC values and decreased the CFU g-1 dry soil, it failed to enhance plant growth characters as much as those by other treatments suggesting dose-dependent phytotoxic effect. Our data suggest that 30g kg-1 soil of leaf or green-top powder applied 20 DBT can be an effective component of the IDM against BW.
