A study about Nutrition based knowledge in Karakoram International University Gilgit-Baltistan

Abstract


Gilgit-Baltistan formerly known as the Northern Areas of Pakistan is the northernmost administrative territory of Pakistan. Karakorum international university is situated in Konadass, Gilgit where students from different ethnics groups come to study here. KIU has one cafeteria and three food delivery places named as Tum Tum, Sabzar and Xam Xam. These provide different foods items beryani, burgur, mumtoo, and not the other then junk foods. These foods are convenience for the students of KIU so they consume in high amount. This study was carried out on thirty students of different eleven departments from different semesters to assess nutrition based knowledge at Karakoram International University Gilgit-Baltistan. The study is non interventional descriptive. The data is collected by using one of the data collecting methods. Questioner form was used as data gathering tool. Questioner form filled by every student.The nutrition based knowledge in KIU is very low. All students in KIU consume fatty foods which are easily available at restaurants of campus. Some students are unconscious about their health. Percentage of students has knowledge about balanced-diet 30%.Percentage of students has knowledge about diet-health relationship 40%.Percentage of students has knowledge about food groups 15%.Percentage of students have knowledge about menu planning 5% .Percentage of students skip breakfast mostly 10%.Percentage of students has knowledge about energy dense food 34%.Percentage of students takes nutritional supplementations 16%.Percentage of students has knowledge about protein and its sources 50%.Percentage of students consume water between 4-8 glasses 50%.Percentage of students have knowledge about importance of breakfast 70%.Percentage of students consume fast/junk food 80%.Percentage of taste conscious students 90%.Percentage of nutrition conscious students 10%.Percentage of students have knowledge about saturated fats 20%.Percentage of students have knowledge about unsaturated fats 15%.Percentage of students have knowledge about iodine 60%.Percentage of students use iodized salt 90% .Percentage of students have knowledge about importance of fruit and vegetables 40%.Percentage of students consume fruit and vegetables on daily basis 20% .Percentage of students have knowledge about iron and its sources 15%.Percentage of students have knowledge about salt-hypertension relationship 55% .Percentage of students have knowledge about fiber 10%.The prevalence of students aware about nutrition is very low. Hardly 15-20% students have little knowledge about nutrition. Some factors are considerable which affect the nutrition based knowledge in university students the factors are, lack of nutrition based programs, unconscious about health, lack of facilities, lack of interest towards health and nutrition.
