Vegetation Analysis of selected semi-arid sites in Al-Mafraq, Jordan

Said Damhoureyeh
Abstract

Two sites outside Surra reserve (managed by Ministry of Agriculture) in Al-Mafraq area, have been selected randomly (North-facing and South-facing slopes) which belong to the Irano-Turanian region (Steppe vegetation). An average of thirty-six quadrate units for each site were surveyed. In addition to vegetation total cover and dry biomass, total number of individuals of each species, number of species and their families were recorded. Moreover, frequency, relative frequency, density, relative density and the importance value were calculated. The variability between the two sites persisted within all measured parameters. The south-facing slopes had lower species richness and number of families with Stipa sp dominating the area compared to the north-facing slopes were dominated by Poa bulbosa. Moreover, Salsola vermiculata was the most important shrub species in both sites. The studied sites are not pristine and highly degraded due to the current land use practices such as grazing, expansion of agricultural areas and urban development.
