Influence of Foliarly Applied Osmoprotectants on Photosynthetic Efficiency, Micronutrients, Protein Expression and Oxidative Activity of Salt Stressed Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Abstract

Influence of foliar application of osmoprotectants (salicylic acid, ascorbic acid, proline and mixture of these) was examined in salinity stresseed sunflower (Halianthus annuus L.). Components of application on this experimentation were (a) two levels of salinity (0mM NaCl and 150mM NaCl) (b) foliar application of salicylic acid, ascorbic acid and proline and mixture of these osmoprotectants @ 200 ppm were applied. Biomass production, chlorophyll content and K+ content were decreased under salt stress but total soluble protein, free amino acids, H2O2, MDA, activity of catalase and accumulation of Na+ increased in the salt treated plants. Among all osmoprotectants proline mitigated the effect of salinity by rising biomass production, chlorophyll content, K+ ion accumulation, total soluble protein and free amino acids, and curtails the Na+ ion accumulation, H2O2, MDA and catalase. Protein profiling by SDS-PAGE showed more protein (50 KDa) in salt treated plants with foliar application of proline. So it is recommended to use proline by foliar application in future for higher protein accumulation under salt stress.
