EVALUATION OF RESISTANCE IN DIFFERENT BASMATI RICE LINES AGAINST RICE STEM BORERS AND LEAFFOLDER UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS

Ijaz Haider
Abstract

Rice stem borers and leaffolder are major insect pests of rice crop in Pakistan. They cause substantial yield loss to the rice crop. A study was conducted at Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku to evaluate the resistance level of different basmati rice varieties against both the insect pests under field conditions. All the 26 genotypes tested showed good level of resistance against rice stem borer. Seven rice varieties namely RRI 3, RRI 4, EF 39, Bas 515, RRI 7, PS 2 and PK 9533 were found resistant against stem borer with 0 damage score. Rest of the varieties have shown damage score 1 which is also resistance grade. Of 26 varieties 17 varieties fall in score 3 of SES of rice and they are moderately resistant to RLF. No variety was found completely resistant to leaffolder. RRI 3 with 12.54%, RRI 4 17.27%. Bas 515 17.27%, RRI 7 13.44%, PK 9435 16.41%, PS 2 16.61% and PK 9301 15.24% are the varieties with lowest levels of leaffolder damage. It is recommended that these lines should be included in the rice breeding program in order to develop resistant varieties to rice leaffolder and stem borers.
