COMPARATIVE WOOD ANATOMY OF TWO ATRAPHAXIS TAXA IN TURKEY

Funda ERŞEN BAK
Abstract

Wood anatomy of two Atraphaxis taxa that have natural distribution in Turkey: Atraphaxis spinosa L. and Atraphaxis billardieri subsp. tournefortii (Jaup. & Spach) Lovelius were investigated comparatively in this study. The wood samples were sectioned according to standart techniques. Samples were macerated with Schultze’s method. Tangential and radial vessel diameters, intervessel pit diameters, vessel wall thickening, vessel elements length, dimensions of libriform fibres (lengths, widths, cell wall thickness and lumen diameter), uniseriate and multiseriate ray widths and heights were measured and number of vessels per mm2, number of rays per mm and number of vessels per group were counted. Also, qualitative features such as growth rings, vessel grouping, presence of helical sculpture and vesturing, storied structure, type of perforation plate and axial parenchyma were determined. Microphotographs were taken with an Olympus BX 53 microscope with DP73 and a Zeiss/Evo LS10 scanning electron microscope. The present study defines and compares the anatomical features of the wood of these two Atraphaxis taxa. These two shrub species of Atraphaxis differ in some wood characteristics such as growth rings, vessel grouping, rays, vestured pits, number of vessels per mm2 and the dimensions of vessel.
