Abstract

Future increases in potential yield of barley will require an improvement in photosynthetic area. Our aim was to investigate the genotypic and environmental effects on the pattern of leaf in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Fifty-two genotypes (45 six and 7 two rowed) were grown during two years under rainfed conditions in Eski?ehir (Northwestern Turkey).Leaf area index and spike characters were determined in this two barley populations. Leaf area index is important component of crop breeding in barley. Flag leaf area of barley was strongly affected by environmental conditions whereas differences between genotypes were not statistically significant. Larger leaf area of two rowed barley correlate with higher kernel weight per spike, however smaller leaf area in six rowed barley can be attribute to more spike characters. In this study, significant variations determined in flag leaf area and spike characters related to barley row types.
