EFFECT OF GAMMA RADIATION ON SOME MORPHOLOGICAL TRAITS OF ALFALFA (MEDICAGO SATIVA L.)

MAJED ALBOKARI
Abstract

Twelve M3 populations originated from local Alfalfa varieties namely K101, Genetex and Silver developed through four different doses of gamma rays viz., 500 Gy, 700 Gy, 900 Gy, 1100 Gy along with controls 0 Gy were evaluated under field conditions. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replicates. This study aimed to investigate the comparative performance of alfalfa mutants as compared to control for the improvement of expression of some important morphological and to select outstanding forage elite genotypes. Data recorded were statistically analysed through analysis of variance method and the means were compared through Duncans multiple range test. The results showed the highly significant differences among various agronomic traits as affected by different doses of gamma rays. Genetic variability and improvement was observed in different traits of mutants derived from various doses of gamma rays. The remarkable improvement was recorded in green matter weight of mutants populations.
