SCREENING OF POTATO GERMPLASM FOR DISEASE RESISTANCE AND HIGH YIELD

SHAZIA MANNAN
Abstract

Potato (Solanum tubersum L.) is one of the most vital crops in Pakistan as well as worldwide. Such an important crop is infected by various fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases that reduce the quality, quantity and market value of potato tubers. In view of the fact that it is a vegetatively propagated crop, a large number of pests and diseases can be passed on from one generation to the next. As a matter of fact ultimately the seeds get contaminated and these infected seeds are used by farmers generation after generation. Pesticides have failed to control all the diseases effectively. Therefore, resistant potato lines must be introduced at commercial level, as this is the most effective way to overcome the diseases. For this purpose the present study was designed where fifteen selected lines of the potato germplasm have been screened for resistance against the diseases including early and late blights, black leg, fusarium wilt, stem canker and powdery scab. Moreover, the effect of these diseases on the physical characters, foliage and tubers were also studied. Out of the fifteen potato lines, SL11-62 was found to be susceptible to all tuber and foliar diseases. Whereas, line FD76-72 was found resistant against all diseases and have high values for yield and related parameters. The line found to be resistant with high yield can be utilized in further breeding experiments and in this way the resistant lines can be established which will help to control diseases and increase potato production.
