Abstract

Peristrophe paniculata (Forssk) Brummitt is a medicinal plant with a number of pharmacological effects and is widely used by herbalists for various ailments. Therefore, the stem of the plant was selected to explore its antioxidant properties including Metal chelating activity, Ferrous reducing ability and free radical scavenging ability. The phytoconstituents i.e., total phenolic contents and total flavonoid contents of the extracts was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method and AlCl3 assays respectively. The methanolic extract of P. paniculata was fractionated with ethyl acetate, n-hexane, chloroform, n-butanol, and water. The TEAC value ranges from 6.050.675-4.370.524 mMol. The %age bound iron ranges from 59.80.859-10.50.156% than the other fractions. The FRAP value falls between 8.280.963-2.680.916 mMol while total phenolic contents 449.990.589-277.490.917 mg/L of GAE. The total flavonoids content ranges from 204.640.841- 106.450.762 mg/L of QE. The result of the present study shows that the medicinal plant is of therapeutic potential because it can trap the free radicals effectively. Pantropical plant containing antioxidants which use in natural medicine and the food industry.
