PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF THE BIOLOGICAL AND TOXICOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF AQUEOUS EXTRACTS OF SOLANUM ELAEAGNIFOLIUM
Doha NAJI
Abstract
An in-depth study of Solanum elaeagnifolium Cav, a plant with well-known biological properties, has been conducted by the scientific community specializing in botanical medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical components present in aqueous extracts of leaves, fruits and stems of Solanum elaeagnifolium Cav, as well as their pharmacological potential, particularly their antioxidant, antibacterial and toxicity effects. The phytochemical screening was caracterised by using standard colorimetrcic tests, to evaluate the antioxidant potential, a DPPH test was performed, while the antibacterial activity was measured by the minimum inhibitory concentration method against four pathogenic microorganisms. Several well-established techniques were used to identify the phytochemicals present in the aqueous extracts. The acute oral toxicity test was performed according to the OECD guidelines. The results show that leaves, fruits and stems are highly rich in phenolics, flavonoids and tannins. The aqueous extract of Solanum elaeagnifolium stems showed strong antioxidant properties, especially through its free radical scavenging activity (DPPH). The aqueous extracts showed a low level of efficacy against four pathogenic microorganisms, and no mortality was observed in rats at a dose of 1000 mg/kg, suggesting a potential use in medicine or even in cosmetics.
