Exploring the Medicinal Flora of Bouira Province in Algeria : An Ethnobotanical Investigation

Abstract


Phytotherapy is a promising alternative in the fight against various diseases. The objective of this study was to conduct an ethnobotanical survey in the province of Bouira, Algeria, with the aim of identifying and recording the plants used in traditional medicine. The study lasted from January 2023 to January 2024 and included interviews with 673 women and 385 men of different ages. The interviews were conducted with the aim of collecting socio-demographic information and data on plant use.. A total of 144 medicinal plant species belonging to 63 botanical families and 134 genera were identified during the survey. The Lamiaceae family (RFC = 0.397, 16 species) was the most represented in terms of species used for therapeutic purposes, followed by the Asteraceae (RFC = 0.197) and Apiaceae (RFC = 0.146) families. The informants interviewed indicated that the most frequently used species in the region were Thymus vulgaris L. (110 citations), Artemisia herba-alba Asso (82 citations), Mentha spicata (74 citations), Verbena officinalis (54 citations), Foeniculum vulgare (38 citations) and Zingiber officinale (35 citations). Among the various plant parts, the leaves were the most commonly used, often in decoction form. Plants from the Bouira region were used to treat 85 illnesses and conditions, including digestive disorders (ICF = 0.86), respiratory diseases (ICF = 0.87), endocrine, metabolic, and nutritional diseases (ICF = 0.79), and skin diseases (ICF = 0.77).
