HERITABILITY AND GENETIC VARIABILITY OF BRASSICA NAPUS L. LINES FOR YIELD AND YIELD-ASSOCIATED TRAITS

Mr. Muhammad Aqib
Abstract

Brassica napus L., commonly known as rapeseed, is a pivotal oilseed crop prized for its versatile applications in agriculture, industry and human nutrition. This research investigated genetic variance, heritability, genetic advance and correlations among some morphological and biochemical traits in advanced Brassica napus L. lines evaluated at the Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Tarnab, Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, during rabi season of 2022-23. Various key traits, such as primary branches plant-1, main raceme length, seeds pod-1, 1000-seed weight and seed yield. Significant (p≤0.01) differences were observed among Brassica napus L. lines for all the studied traits. Maximum primary branches (10) was recorded for line NR-01. Line, NR-03 manifested longest main raceme (83). Brassica napus L. line, NR-16 displayed maximum 1000-seed weight (4.1 g), while maximum seed yield (2667 kg ha-1) was produced by line NR-11. High broad-sense heritability was observed for main raceme length (0.92), seed yield (0.81) and seed pod-1 (0.72) indicating strong genetic variation. Primary branches (27.55), main raceme length (19.78) and seed yield (14.29) showed high genetic advance as a percent of mean. Seed yield showed significantly positive phenotypic and genotypic relationships with pod length (rp = 0.31*). Significantly positive correlations were identified between the length of the main raceme and primary branches plant-1 (rp = 0.45**, rg = 0.58**) emphasizing their collective impact on seeds pod-1. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the interrelationships among yield-contributing traits in advanced Brassica napus L. lines. On the basis of superior performance for yield and its contributing traits line, NR-05, NR-06, NR-10, NR-11, NR-16, and NR-18 could be recommended for further evaluation.
