Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the “Response of selected pea varieties against pea leafminer Phytomyza horticola Goureau (Diptera: Agromyzidae)” at Entomology Section ARI Tarnab, Peshawar during the year, 2022. For this experiment, five pea varieties (Tarnab pea, Lina Pak, Bashir2021, Meteor and Classic) were purchased from local market and cultivated in a well prepared field in RCBD setup with three replications. Results variety showed that highest pea leaf miner infestation (6.67 larva plant-1) was recorded on Tarnab Pea followed by variety Lina pak (6.25 larva plant-1) while the lowest infestation (3.68 larva plant-1) was recorded in Meteor. Maximum (69.94cm) and minimum (41.41cm) plant heights were recorded in Tarnab pea and Meteor varieties. Highest number of pods plant-1 (19.25) were recorded in Meteor and the lowest (13.95) in Tarnab pea. Maximum pod length and grains pod-1 were observed in Meteor (9.42cm, 16.13), while minimum were noted in Tranab pea (7.75cm, 13.17). The highest pea pods yield (4180.5 kg ha-1) was produced by Meteor, while Tarnab pea resulted in lowest yield with average production of (2863.9 kg ha-1). Results for biochemical analysis of tested pea varieties showed that significantly highest protein (36.13%), fats (5.69%), nitrogen (5.52%) and moisture contents (89.11%) were recorded in Tarnab pea, while the lowest respective values (12.85%, 3.46%, 2.48%, 77.42%) were observed in Meteor for protein, fats, nitrogen and moisture contents. Furthermore, results of Antixenosis test for five tested varieties under laboratory conditions performed in completely Randomized Design indicated that Meteor was the most resistant variety against the pea leaf miner with lowest infestation (4.75 larvae plant-1) followed by Bashir 2021 (4.79 larvae plant-1), Lina Pak (4.90 larva plant-1) and Classic (5.02 larva plant-1). Tarnab pea was recorded the most susceptible variety with maximum pea leaf miner infestation (5.11 larva plant-1). Minimum number of mines (0.81 mines leaf-1) were observed on Meteor, while Tarnab pea showed maximum (1.11 mines leaf-1) in comparison to all other treatments. It was concluded that meteor was comparatively more resistant to the attack of leaf miner under field conditions and resulted in higher yield as compared to all other varieties. Therefore, Meteor variety should be brought under cultivation for its comparatively high resistance and more production under filed condition in District Peshawar and further research on their performance against other insect pests should be studied.
