INFLUENCE OF VARYING CONCENTRATION OF GIBBERELLIC ACID AND EPSOM SALT ON VEGETATIVE GROWTH, FLOWERING AND POST-HARVEST QUALITY OF TUBEROSE (Polianthes tuberosa L.)

Muhammad Umer Nawaz
Abstract

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa) held significant importance as an ornamental plant, playing a vital role in the perfumery sector. Evaluating the excellence of cut flowers for both local and international markets involved crucial considerations: the maintenance of quality and the duration of vase life. The research was conducted in the field area of PMAS-AAUR Pakistan. The research aimed to determine the influence of varying concentrations of Gibberellic acid and Epsom salt on the vegetative growth, flowering, and post-harvest quality of tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa). The combinations were as follows: Control, GA3+Epsom salt (100ppm+15mg), GA3+Epsom salt (100ppm+30mg), GA3+Epsom salt (100ppm+45mg), GA3+Epsom salt (200ppm+15mg), GA3+Epsom salt (200ppm+30mg), GA3+Epsom salt (200ppm+45mg), GA3+Epsom salt (300ppm+15mg), GA3+Epsom salt (300ppm+30mg), GA3+Epsom salt (300ppm+45mg). A randomized complete block design layout was used in an open field experiment with 3 replications and 10 treatments. The study investigated the influence of Gibberellic acid (GA3) and Epsom salt (MgSO4) at a concentration of (300ppm+45mg) on the vegetative growth, flowering, and post-harvest longevity of tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa). The results demonstrated that the combination of growth regulators led to a significant increase in the plant's height (72.30 cm), number of leaves (38.30), leaf area (69.06 cm²), chlorophyll content (96.73 µmol/m²), survival percentage of flowers (100%), number of florets per spike (35.96), fresh weight (58.73 g), dry weight (8.33 g), vase life (12.43), and number of bulbs per plant (30.66). Minimum growth was observed in T4 at a concentration of (200ppm+15mg) with plant height (43.40 cm), number of leaves (19.40), leaf area (48.20 cm²), chlorophyll content (59.40 µmol/m²), minimum survival percentage of flowers (56.67%), number of florets per spike (19.30), fresh weight (36.46 g), dry weight (2.44 g), vase life (5.99), and number of bulbs per plant (14). Keywords:     Epsom salt, Flowering, Gibberellic acid, Growth, Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa), Vase life.
