Abstract

In bread wheat (T. aestivum L.) breeding, introgression of useful genes via intergeneric hybridization is a powerful strategy for improving the crop productivity. Ae. neglecta  shows great potential in terms of useful traits; however, little is known about the cytogenetic and agronomic characteristics of intergeneric hybrids between these two species. Here, we examine the cytogenetic and agronomic characteristics, and relationships between the two in intergeneric F1 hybrids between bread wheat lines - 171 and 172 ACS  and  Ae. neglecta originated and collected from different populations of Azerbaijan and their morphological characteristics. The seed setting of the hybrids varied from 1.56 to 51.72, meiotic analysis showed in F1 plants have 35 chromosomes, as expected. FISH identification of the chromosomes of the 45-chromosome BC1F1 hybrid plant belonging to the combination (171ACS × Ae. neglecta) × 172ACS  and observed that that 2 6Un and 1 5Un chromosomes of Ae neglecta. This detailed information on intergeneric F1 hybrids between bread wheat lines and Ae. neglecta  will contribute to effective utilization of Ae. neglecta in bread wheat breeding.
