Abstract

ABSTRACT The cotton fiber quality and yield traits can be improved by using good combiners and producing useful hybrids for selection. Hence, in the present research four lines and two testers are used to study Line x Tester analysis for earliness, yield and fiber traits of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). The results depicted that the mean squares of analysis of variance revealed that the genotypes, parents, crosses, line × testers interactions were significant at P>0.01 probability level for the traits via plant height (cm), monopodial branches plant-1, sympodial branches plant-1, date of the first flower, date of the first open boll, number of bolls  plant-1, boll weight (g), ginning out turn- G.O.T (%), lint index, seed cotton yield plant-1(g), microniare value (µg inch-1) and staple length (mm). Mean performance for different lines, testers and F1hybrids depicted that the line NIA-Noori and IUB-2013 are the best parental line producing maximum  monopodial branches, earlier days to flowering, sympodial branches plant-1,number of boll opening, lint index and microniare value (ug inch-1). Sadori also produced greater number of bolls plant-1(45.4), ginning out turn percentage (37.00) and staple length mm (27.8). Among hybrids NIA-Noori x DG, Sadori x DG, NIA-Ufaq x TG, IUB-2013 x TG determined to be best hybrids for greater sympodial branches plant-1, largest staple length and number of bolls. The GCA effects showed that parent line NIA-Noori and Sadori showing additive gene effects. Among hybrids NIA-Noori x DG, Sadori x DG, NIA-Ufaq x TG, IUB-2013 x TG contributed positive and significant effect for greater sympodial branches plant-1, largest staple length, number of bolls and seed cotton yield plant-1. These hybrids could be suitable to resembling desirable genotypes for further breeding selection. Key Words: Line x Tester analysis, combining ability effects, Bt Cotton, Non-Bt cotton, Cotton yield,                              Earliness, Fiber quality.
